White Rose of Yorkshire
The White Rose of York was the emblem of the Royal House of York. It was first adopted by Edmond of Langley, the first Duke of York in the 14th Century. It represents the virgin Mary, who was often called the "Mystical Rose of Heaven" (white being the symbol of purity).
The White Rose was used on the armorial bearings and standards during the Wars of the Roses 1450 - 1485 and became the county symbol of Yorkshire.
