The Fire of 1984

The Fire of 1984

At 2.30am on the morning of Monday 9th July 1984 the alarm sounded in the Minster and York Fire Station. Within minutes fire-fighters were on the scene, within an hour the medieval roof of the South transept was gone.

It took four years to restore the South Transept and the vault now contains 6 modern bosses representing key events of the 20th Century. They were designed by children as a result of a competition staged by the BBC TV programme Blue Peter.

The South Transept was rededicated in 1988 by the Queen and Archbishop Habgood.
