Licorne Captive, The Captive Unicorn

150cm x 110cm. THE CAPTIVE UNICORN - 15th century. A fine Jacquard woven wall tapestry, fully lined, embellished with a medieval style acantus border. The originals are a set of six' wall hangings woven in the 15th century depicting the unicorn hunt, this panel the sixth, shows the unicorn seated within an enclosure in a flowery mede. Note the 'mille fleur' (thousand flowers) style, i.e. covered with tiny flowers, among which can be seen pansies, ragged robin, violets, daisies, harebells, bluebells, periwinkles a other wild flowers. Gold, silk and fine wools were used in the weaving of the original. Woven in France for the family La Rochefoucauld which adorned their chateau of Verteuil. The series was sold for 1,100,000 dollars in 1923 to Mr JD Rockefeller and can now be seen in the Metropolitan Museum New York.
